True Justice for George Floyd Will Come From Investing In Black People and Defunding the Police, Not the Unjust Criminal Legal System

Today, a jury returned a GUILTY verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd. At Movement for Black Lives, we are working towards liberation for all Black people, because we believe all Black lives matter. We know the current unjust criminal legal system will not deliver liberation, let alone justice.

After Derek Chauvin was found guilty by jury of all three charges against him for the murder of George Floyd, Karissa Lewis, National Field Director of the Movement for Black Lives, issued the following statement:

The Movement for Black Lives and our supporters support the family and community of Daunte Wright who had his life ripped from him by former police officer Kim Potter. Daunte was a beloved son, brother and father to a two-year-old. We’re grieving alongside his family and community, and will continue fighting to defund the police in the pursuit of justice and Black liberation.
